Jens Kothe

Born in 1985, Jens Kothe lives and works in Bochum, Germany. His sculptural work, consisting of bench-like shapes and self-described  ‘wall-objects’  instigate a visceral experience in the viewer. Familiar shapes, taken from the human body, appear in unfamiliar situations. The body seems ever-present in his work yet removed, isolated from the whole.
The rounded edges and slightly raised beds of material remind one of a tufted sofa or pillow. This interplay between the body and the domestic sphere feeds into each other, the body as the domicile we inhabit. The materials used, o.a fur, wood, silicon, Molton and latex ask to be experienced haptically. Recognizing this want in the viewer and himself, Kothe often creates the opportunity for the object to be interacted with by a performer or the viewer themselves.
Kothe studied under Andreas Gursky at Academy Düsseldorf. Recent exhibitions include ‘Element System’, Berthold Pott, Cologne; ‘Insane in the membrane’ at Philara Collection, Düsseldorf, ‘Die Grosse’, Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf and Ruhrtriennale, Bochum.
