Fiona Rae

Fiona Rae is a painter of abstract forms, bright colors, and hypnotic designs. Born in Hong Kong, she moved to England where she attended Croydon College of Art from 1983 to 1984 and Goldsmiths College from 1984 to 1987, where she earned her BFA in 1987 with honors. In 1988 she was one of the artists exhibited in Freeze, an art exhibition curated by Damien Hirst. The Freeze show started the Young British Artists (YBAs), and Rae became a prominent member of the group.

She was selected for the 44th Venice Bienniale in 1990, shortlisted for the Turner Prize at the Tate Gallery in 1991, as well as nominated for the Eliette von Karajan Prize for Young Painters in Austria, in 1993. In the early 2000s she was inducted into London’s Royal Academy of Art and later appointed a Tate Artist Trustee. She is represented by the Pace Gallery in New York and Beijing, the Galerie Obadia in Paris and Brussels, the Timothy Taylor Gallery in London, and the Buchmann Galerie in Berlin, Germany.

Her work is held by many art institutions worldwide such as the Royal Academy of Arts and the Tate Modern in London, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Rae currently lives and works in London where she is professor of painting at the Royal Academy of Arts.
