Carlotta Bailly-Borg

Carlotta Bailly-Borg (FR, 1984) lives and works in Brussels. Her work features fluid humanoid creatures, whose nebulous sensual bodies flow together. Her praxis encompasses ceramics and painting, on glass, paper, and canvas. The inspiration for her at times grotesque figures comes from medieval medical drawings, Greek mythology and old Peruvian ceramics. A recent series of work are ceramics in the shape of amphoras. The unfired vases were dropped on a hard surface and the subsequent new form has been given an identity by Bailly-Borg by scratching faces into the whitewashed clay. The expressions are open to interpretation, are they an indication of the violence done to the original shape of the vase? We could see an open-mouthed scream but does it signify inhale or exhale, pain or petite mort?

Carlotta Bailly-Borg has presented her work at a.o Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Bosse&Baum, London; Fondation Ricard, Paris; Galerie Sultana, Paris; Baltic Triennial 13, South London Gallery, London; and Karma International, Los Angeles.
